A project that took 18 young people, ages 12-22 from all over Westchester, to create a CD of original hip hop songs inspired by Dr. King’s Six Principles of Nonviolence. They brought other youth to join in on conversation at an annual community gathering called Ending Violence Building Hope, where amongst each other they explored the persistence of violence in our society and our world, particularly in the lives of youth they also discussed how to
educate and activate ourselves to eradicate violence, and how to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.(2-9-2008)[Partnered with the Westchester M.L.K Institute for Nonviolence}

These dedicated, talented young Westchester musicians have performed as a group and individually at numerous Westchester venues—community centers, schools and religious institutions, as well as public events including the White Plains Juneteenth Festival. Most even had the honor of performing at the legendary Carnegie Hall as members of the Music Conservatory of Westchester’s Hip Hop Ensemble. With their mentor Lord Judah as producer, and the support of the Westchester Martin Luther King Institute, they have used their passion for music to create two CDs of songs inspired by Dr. King. These members of H.I.P. H.O.P. believe in their power and potential and, like Dr. King, they are “drum majors for change.”
